Ames National Laboratory Scientist II/III/IV, Ames National Laboratory, Ames, Iowa (23 January 2025)

Ames National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratory on the  campus of Iowa State University, delivers critical materials solutions to the nation. For over 75 years, Ames National Laboratory has successfully partnered with Iowa State University of Science and Technology to lead in the discovery, synthesis, analysis, and use of new materials, novel chemistries, and transformational analytical tools

Ames Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy federally contracted National Laboratory located in Ames, Iowa, on the campus of Iowa State University. We are dedicated to translating foundational science through applied research to create technological innovations. We create materials, inspire minds to solve problems, and address some of the most challenging issues facing our world today. We promote and believe in a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, civility, and shared ownership in support of the Laboratory’s collective success.

Ames National Laboratory is seeking candidates for staff positions of Scientist II, III, or IV, to work in the development and application of machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI), and data science, to work with teams of physical science researchers. Ames National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratory on the campus of Iowa State University, delivers critical materials solutions to the nation. For over 75 years, Ames National Laboratory has successfully partnered with Iowa State University of Science and Technology to lead in the discovery, synthesis, analysis, and application of new materials, novel chemistries, and transformational analytical tools. Key areas of research include: quantum materials and quantum information science; chemical catalysis and separations; plastic upcycling; critical materials, magnetic materials, and rare earth science; and materials for harsh conditions. These reflect the Laboratory’s strong expertise in rare earth and magnetic materials; materials design, synthesis, and characterization; solid state nuclear magnetic resonance; computational chemistry including exascale code development and applications; condensed matter theory; and computational materials science and materials theory.

Successful applicants will lead AI/ML efforts in fundamental computational science, applied math, and the connection between these and fundamental physical sciences. Successful applicants will help create novel combinations of experimental, theoretical, and computational studies that complement existing expertise in chemical and biological sciences, condensed matter physics and materials sciences, and/or critical materials research. Also of interest are applicants that complement existing expertise at Ames Laboratory in exascale computing.

The position will require extensive collaboration with researchers across Ames National Laboratory as well as building external collaborations and externally funded research programs. The successful candidate will develop new research directions/programs, write research proposals for future funding of research projects (as PI or co-PI), and support the Laboratory’s mission through interactions with stakeholders including DOE program managers.
